Simple Hand-Washing Habits That Protect Your Family

Washing your hands is a simple habit that makes a big difference. It helps stop germs from spreading at home, at school and at work, keeping the whole family healthier.

When to wash

  • Before preparing food or eating.
  • After using the bathroom or changing diapers.
  • After coughing, sneezing or blowing your nose.
  • After being in public places or caring for someone who is unwell.

How to wash well

Wet your hands, lather with soap, scrub the backs of your hands, between your fingers and under your nails, rinse well and dry with a clean towel.

Hum a short song while you scrub to make sure you wash for long enough.

Teach children early

Make hand washing fun with colorful soap and simple reminders, and set a good example yourself.
